Matthew 18:20
“For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there I am in the middle of them.””
What does Matthew 18:20 mean?
When Jesus says this, he's offering deep comfort about God's presence among us. He's not suggesting that two or three people casually mentioning his name will feel him show up, but rather that when we gather with genuine intention to follow him, seek his guidance, or pray together in his spirit, he is truly present with us in that community. This became especially meaningful to early Christians who couldn't always gather in large groups, and it still speaks to anyone meeting in small prayer circles, Bible studies, or even just two friends praying together in a difficult time. Jesus is saying that intimacy with him doesn't require crowds or impressive buildings, just authentic gathering in his name and purpose.
