What does Matthew 17:24 mean?
In Jesus's time, every Jewish male was expected to contribute a special temple tax to support the Jerusalem temple's upkeep and services. The collectors have come to Peter asking whether Jesus plans to pay this obligation, which was a normal civic and religious duty for observant Jews. Peter's response (which continues in the next verses) becomes the launching point for one of Jesus's most memorable teachings about freedom, obedience, and how we relate to authority. The question itself isn't hostile, just a routine tax collection, but it sets up a moment where Jesus addresses something deeper about following him and living wisely in the world around us.
