What does Matthew 16:22 mean?
Peter has just heard Jesus predict his own suffering and death, and he can't accept it. In his devotion and concern, Peter pulls Jesus aside privately and argues against what Jesus just said, essentially saying "No way, Lord, that's not going to happen to you." It's a moment of genuine care mixed with a fundamental misunderstanding of what Jesus came to do. This scene feels very human and relatable. Peter loves Jesus and wants to protect him, so he speaks up without hesitation. But Jesus is about to gently correct him, because Peter's well-meaning objection is actually rooted in worldly thinking rather than understanding God's plan. Sometimes the people closest to us, even with the best intentions, can lead us away from what we're called to do.
