What does Matthew 15:17 mean?

Jesus is responding to his disciples' confusion about spiritual purity, and he's cutting through their anxiety with plain logic. He's saying that what we eat is purely physical, working through our digestive system and then leaving our body, so food itself cannot make us spiritually unclean. This matters because the religious leaders of his time had built up complex rules about which foods were "clean" or "unclean," and these rules had become a heavy burden. Jesus is gently telling his followers not to worry so much about these external regulations. He's about to point them toward something deeper: that our real spiritual struggle comes from what's in our hearts and minds, not from what we put in our mouths. If you're carrying guilt about accidentally breaking a food rule or worried about ritual purity, this verse is meant to bring you relief and refocus your attention on what truly matters in your relationship with God.
