What does Matthew 13:9 mean?

Jesus repeats this phrase several times throughout Matthew's gospel, and it's an invitation to listen with real attention. He's not just asking people to hear his words with their ears, but to genuinely understand what he's saying, to let it sink in and change how they think. When you're going through something difficult, it's easy to hear words without really taking them in, or to dismiss something important because we're distracted or defensive. This phrase gently reminds us that understanding spiritual truth takes something from us: openness, willingness, and a readiness to let our minds be shaped by what we encounter.
