Matthew 13:17
“For most certainly I tell you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which you see, and didn’t see them; and to hear the things which you hear, and didn’t hear them.”
What does Matthew 13:17 mean?
Jesus is telling his disciples something remarkable: they're witnessing something so significant that the faithful people of old—prophets and righteous ancestors—longed to experience what the disciples were seeing and hearing in that very moment. He's speaking about his own presence and teaching, the breaking in of God's kingdom happening right before their eyes. There's both privilege and responsibility in this. The disciples aren't getting something they earned or deserved; they're receiving a gift that others, despite their faithfulness and desire, never received. Jesus seems to want them to understand the weight of what they're part of, to pay attention, and perhaps to recognize that what feels ordinary in the moment (listening to a teacher by the sea) is actually extraordinary. For those of us reading this today, it's a gentle reminder that we too have access to God's word and presence in ways that transcend time, and that's worth taking seriously.
