Matthew 12:8
βFor the Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.ββ
What does Matthew 12:8 mean?
Jesus is saying that he has authority over the Sabbath itself, not the other way around. The religious leaders of his day had developed strict rules about what you could and couldn't do on the Sabbath (the day of rest), but Jesus is claiming that as God's Son, he stands above those rules and can determine how the Sabbath should truly be observed. This statement would have been shocking to his audience because it's essentially a claim to divine authority. What matters most to Jesus isn't rigid rule-following, but mercy and meeting people's actual needs, even on the day meant for rest.
