“Or have you not read in the law, that on the Sabbath day, the priests in the temple profane the Sabbath, and are guiltless?”
What does Matthew 12:5 mean?
Jesus is pointing out something his critics missed: even their own religious law allowed for necessary work on the Sabbath. The priests had to perform their temple duties every single day, including the Sabbath, yet nobody accused them of breaking God's law. He's making a logical point that if routine temple work was permitted, then surely healing someone (which Jesus had just done) should be too. This helps us see that Jesus wasn't being careless about the law, but rather asking his accusers to think more carefully about what the law actually meant. Rules exist for our good, not as rigid traps, and sometimes the deeper principle behind a rule matters more than a surface-level application of it.
