Matthew 11:23
“You, Capernaum, who are exalted to heaven, you will go down to Hades. For if the mighty works had been done in Sodom which were done in you, it would have remained until today.”
What does Matthew 11:23 mean?
Jesus speaks these hard words to Capernaum, a fishing town on the Sea of Galilee where he did many of his miracles and spent considerable time teaching. He's saying that despite witnessing his power firsthand, the town rejected him, and that rejection carries real consequences. The comparison to Sodom (a city destroyed for its wickedness in the Old Testament) emphasizes how serious it is to turn away from God when you've actually seen his work up close. This isn't meant as arbitrary punishment, but as a statement about how opportunity and responsibility go together. When we encounter truth and grace clearly, we're accountable for how we respond.
