What does Matthew 10:2 mean?
Matthew begins listing the twelve men Jesus chose as his closest followers and partners in his mission. Simon Peter and his brother Andrew were fishermen who left their nets to follow Jesus, and they're listed first, suggesting their prominence in the early movement. James and John, also brothers and also fishermen, complete this opening group and would become known as "sons of thunder" for their passionate temperaments. These names matter because they represent real people, not just ideas, and the fact that Jesus built his movement on ordinary working men rather than religious scholars or political figures tells us something important about how God works.
