What does Matthew 1:21 mean?
The angel Gabriel is speaking to Joseph here, telling him that Mary will have a son and instructing him what to name the child. The name "Jesus" itself means "God saves" in Hebrew (Yeshua), so there's a beautiful connection between the name and the mission: this child will rescue people from the grip and consequence of their sins. What makes this moment significant is that it frames Jesus's entire purpose from the very beginning. He isn't coming to be a political leader or military hero, despite what many were expecting. Instead, he comes to address something far deeper and more universal than any earthly problem: our spiritual brokenness and separation from God. The phrase "his people" suggests both a specific calling to Israel and an invitation that reaches much wider.
