What does Matthew 1:16 mean?
This verse completes Matthew's genealogy of Jesus by naming Joseph and Mary, though it subtly signals something remarkable. The phrasing "from whom was born Jesus" breaks the pattern of the entire family tree, which up until now has said "A was the father of B." Here, Jesus is born "from" Mary, not "from" Joseph, hinting at what Matthew will explain in the next verses: that Jesus had no earthly father. For readers who knew about virgin birth accounts, this wording would have stood out immediately. For others, it simply establishes that Mary was Jesus's mother and introduces his title, "Christ" (meaning the anointed one, or Messiah). Matthew is both claiming Jesus as part of God's chosen lineage and marking him as fundamentally different from everyone else in that line.
