Mark 9:4
βElijah and Moses appeared to them, and they were talking with Jesus.β
What does Mark 9:4 mean?
In this moment, Jesus takes three of his closest disciples up a mountain where his appearance becomes radiant and otherworldly. The sudden arrival of Moses and Elijah, two of the most towering figures in Jewish history, shows that Jesus stands in direct continuity with God's work throughout the ages. These weren't just any figures: Moses brought the law and liberation from Egypt, while Elijah was the prophet who performed miracles and challenged false religion. Their presence speaking with Jesus suggests that everything they represented finds its fulfillment in him. For the disciples witnessing this, it would have been both bewildering and affirming, a glimpse that Jesus belonged to a conversation far larger than their immediate circumstances.
