“John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone who doesn’t follow us casting out demons in your name; and we forbade him, because he doesn’t follow us.””
What does Mark 9:38 mean?
John and the other disciples had just watched someone use Jesus' name to drive out demons, but this person wasn't part of their inner circle. Rather than celebrate the victory over evil, John reported it like it was a problem, assuming they'd done the right thing by stopping him. There's a very human protectiveness happening here, a kind of spiritual gatekeeping, where the disciples wanted to control who got to use Jesus' power and authority. What makes this moment tender is that John seems genuinely uncertain. He's bringing it to Jesus almost like he's asking for approval, which shows he cared about doing things correctly. But his assumption that outsiders shouldn't be allowed to help reveals how easily we can confuse loyalty to a group with loyalty to what actually matters. Jesus will gently correct this in the next verse, but here we simply see the disciples' honest struggle with jealousy and boundaries.
