“For whoever will be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man also will be ashamed of him, when he comes in his Father’s glory, with the holy angels.””
What does Mark 8:38 mean?
Jesus is speaking about the cost of following him, and he's being honest about what he asks. When we're ashamed of him or his teachings—maybe we stay silent when we could speak up, or we distance ourselves from faith to fit in—we're essentially saying his way doesn't matter to us. Jesus warns that this choice has real consequences: when he returns in full power and glory, he won't advocate for us the way we refused to advocate for him. This isn't meant to shame you if you've struggled with fear or doubt. Rather, it's an invitation to consider what matters most to you. Jesus is asking if we trust him enough to stand with him, even when it costs something. The promise hidden in this warning is that those who do stay faithful find him faithful in return.
