What does Mark 8:16 mean?

The disciples have just heard Jesus warn them to watch out for the "leaven of the Pharisees and Sadducees," but they completely miss the spiritual point. Instead, they start anxiously debating among themselves about the fact that they forgot to pack bread for their boat trip. It's one of those very human moments where people caught up in worry can't hear what's actually being said to them. Jesus is trying to teach them about false teachings and spiritual deception, but their minds are stuck on a practical problem. In the next verses, Jesus gently calls out this literal-mindedness, reminding them that he's already miraculously fed thousands and can certainly take care of their hunger. There's something both tender and amusing here about how easily we miss the deeper lesson when we're distracted by immediate concerns.
