What does Mark 7:3 mean?
The Jewish people had developed detailed hand-washing practices over centuries, believing they were part of staying spiritually clean and honoring God's law. The Pharisees were especially strict about these traditions, and they expected everyone else to follow them too. When Mark mentions this practice, he's setting up why the Pharisees were about to criticize Jesus and his disciples for eating without going through these ritual washings. Understanding this helps us see that their complaint wasn't really about basic hygiene or manners, but about whether Jesus respected the accumulated religious traditions that had become central to Jewish life.
