Mark 6:2
“When the Sabbath had come, he began to teach in the synagogue, and many hearing him were astonished, saying, “Where did this man get these things?” and, “What is the wisdom that is given to this man, that such mighty works come about by his hands?”
What does Mark 6:2 mean?
Jesus returned to his hometown of Nazareth and taught in the local synagogue on the Sabbath, and people were genuinely amazed by what they heard. Their astonishment wasn't simple admiration, though, it was mixed with confusion and maybe even skepticism, as if they were saying, "How can this be? We know where he comes from, so where is all this wisdom and power really coming from?" The people recognized something real and powerful in his teaching and the reports of his miracles, but they struggled to reconcile it with the ordinary carpenter they thought they knew. It's a very human response, really, one that shows how hard it can be to see someone we've known for years in a completely new light.
