“King Herod heard this, for his name had become known, and he said, “John the Baptizer has risen from the dead, and therefore these powers are at work in him.””
What does Mark 6:14 mean?
When Jesus began performing miracles and drawing crowds, word spread quickly, and it reached King Herod. Herod had executed John the Baptist earlier for rebuking his unlawful marriage, and now guilt and fear gripped him as he heard about Jesus' powerful acts. Rather than recognize Jesus for who he was, Herod jumped to the conclusion that John had somehow come back from the dead and was working through this new preacher. It's a telling moment, showing how a guilty conscience can distort our perception of truth and how fear can make us see what we expect rather than what's actually before us.
