What does Mark 5:1 mean?

Jesus and his disciples have just crossed the Sea of Galilee during a storm, and now they're arriving on the eastern shore in a region called Gadarenes (also known as Gerasenes). This was gentile territory, outside the Jewish heartland, which makes the crossing itself significant: Jesus isn't limiting his ministry to his own people. What happens next in this account shows Jesus bringing healing and hope to someone deeply suffering, demonstrating that his compassion reaches across cultural and religious boundaries to whoever needs it most.
