Mark 4:27
“and should sleep and rise night and day, and the seed should spring up and grow, though he doesn’t know how.”
What does Mark 4:27 mean?
This is Jesus describing what happens when someone plants seeds and then simply trusts the process. The farmer does the work of planting, then goes about his normal life—sleeping and waking—while the seed does its invisible work underground. By the time growth becomes visible, he still doesn't fully understand the mechanics of how it happened. Jesus uses this image to talk about how God's kingdom works in us. We participate (we plant, we show up, we try), but we're not the ones actually transforming hearts or creating spiritual growth. That mysterious, unseen work belongs to God. It's a reassuring picture if you're worried that your efforts aren't enough, or if you're straining to make something happen that requires patience and trust. The seed knows what to do. Sometimes our job is just to plant faithfully and let go.
