What does Mark 4:12 mean?
Jesus is quoting the prophet Isaiah here, describing why he teaches in parables. On the surface it sounds strange, like Jesus *wants* people to miss his message, but it actually describes how spiritual hardness works. When people have already decided against God, even clear teaching won't change their minds, because they don't want it to. The parable approach respects that choice while still offering truth to those genuinely seeking it. The verse reflects something we recognize in real life: you can show someone the plainest evidence or clearest argument, but if they're not willing to listen, they won't truly hear it. Jesus isn't saying he's hiding the kingdom from humble seekers, but rather that those who've shut their hearts against God will continue to do so, whether the message is obvious or concealed in story form. For those with open hearts, even a parable opens understanding.
