Mark 2:14
“As he passed by, he saw Levi, the son of Alphaeus, sitting at the tax office, and he said to him, “Follow me.” And he arose and followed him.”
What does Mark 2:14 mean?
Levi was a tax collector, which meant most Jewish people despised him as a traitor working for Rome's occupation. Yet Jesus saw him at his desk and simply invited him to follow. What's remarkable here is not Levi's worthiness but Jesus' willingness to call someone society had written off, and Levi's immediate response—he didn't hesitate or make excuses. Later Matthew's Gospel tells us this is the same man known as Matthew, the one who would become an apostle and write one of the four Gospels. This moment shows that Jesus didn't come for the people everyone already approved of; he came for those stuck in dead-end lives, real or imagined, and offered them a completely different future.
