What does Mark 15:9 mean?
Pilate is offering the crowd a choice, though he's doing so with a certain mockery. He's holding up Jesus as "the King of the Jews," a title that was considered absurd and blasphemous by the religious authorities who brought Jesus to him. What makes this moment so tragic is that Pilate seems to be testing whether the people themselves might choose Jesus's freedom, perhaps hoping to find a way out of executing someone he apparently didn't believe was truly guilty. Instead of accepting this offer, the crowd will shortly demand Barabbas, a violent criminal, be released instead. It's one of the most piercing moments in Scripture, showing how quickly public opinion can turn and how a leader seeking favor from the crowd can be dragged along by their will.
