What does Mark 15:46 mean?
Joseph of Arimathea, a member of the council who had opposed Jesus's execution, stepped forward after the crucifixion to handle something the disciples couldn't do in their grief and fear. He used his own resources and status to give Jesus an honorable burial, wrapping the body in fine linen (a sign of respect) and placing it in his own unused tomb carved from rock, which was a costly, dignified resting place. The rolling of the stone across the entrance wasn't just closure, it was standard practice that sealed the tomb and showed the burial was complete and witnessed. In Matthew's account, guards are later posted there, and in all four Gospels, the stone becomes significant again when the women discover the resurrection. What's beautiful here is that even in death, Jesus received care and dignity from someone who risked his reputation to do so, and it set the stage for what comes next.
