What does Mark 15:4 mean?
Pilate seems almost bewildered here, pressing Jesus to defend himself against the accusations piling up. In Roman legal proceedings, a defendant had the right and was generally expected to respond to charges, so Pilate's repeated question reflects his surprise at Jesus's silence. Jesus's refusal to mount a defense wasn't weakness or resignation, but a kind of dignity and purpose, as though he understood something about his coming death that made arguing his innocence beside the point.
