Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, “Behold, he is calling Elijah.”

What does Mark 15:35 mean?

In Jesus' final moments on the cross, he cried out in Aramaic, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" (My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?). Some bystanders misheard or misunderstood his words, thinking he was calling for Elijah, the ancient prophet who in Jewish tradition was expected to return before the Messiah came. What was actually an anguished prayer was twisted into something else by those listening. This moment captures how easily people can mishear, misinterpret, or dismiss what's really happening, especially in moments of suffering. It's also a poignant reminder that in his deepest pain, Jesus felt abandoned, speaking words that resonate with anyone who has ever felt utterly alone.
