What does Mark 15:31 mean?
The religious leaders watching Jesus die on the cross taunted him with words meant to prove he was a fraud. If he truly had power to heal and rescue people (as he'd done many times), they reasoned, surely he could save himself from crucifixion. What they didn't understand, and what makes this moment so deeply ironic, is that Jesus' refusal to use his power to escape the cross was actually the greatest act of salvation possible, not a failure of it. His willingness to stay and die for humanity's sake was the whole point of his mission, even though it looked like weakness and defeat to those standing there.
