What does Mark 15:28 mean?
This moment captures something deeply painful and purposeful happening at Jesus's crucifixion. Mark is pointing out that even in his execution, Jesus fulfilled an ancient prophecy (from Isaiah 53:12) about the coming Messiah being grouped with criminals and wrongdoers. Jesus was literally crucified between two thieves, positioned as though he belonged among the guilty. What makes this significant is that Jesus wasn't actually a criminal or transgressor, yet he accepted being treated as one. In that acceptance, he was bearing the weight of human sin and shame, standing in solidarity with all of us who feel marked by guilt or failure. For anyone carrying heavy burdens of their own, there's comfort in knowing that Jesus understood what it felt like to be counted among the broken and condemned, not from his own doing but by choice, to be present with us there.
