What does Mark 15:24 mean?

At Jesus's execution, the Roman soldiers divided up his few possessions as was customary with condemned prisoners. They cast lots (like drawing straws) to decide who got what, treating this moment of profound suffering as just another routine task. What might seem like a small detail carries weight: even in his final hours, Jesus was stripped of everything, left with nothing. Matthew, Mark, and John all record this detail partly because it echoes Psalm 22:18, where the psalmist describes enemies dividing his garments, reminding believers that Jesus's suffering was woven into God's long story of redemption.
