What does Mark 15:18 mean?

This moment captures the brutal mockery Jesus faced before his crucifixion. The Roman soldiers, not understanding or caring about his actual identity, were playing a cruel game, treating him like a fake king and greeting him with false deference (much like how they might mockingly "honor" any prisoner they wanted to humiliate). What's striking is that in their scorn, they actually spoke something true: Jesus really was and is a king, though his kingdom works entirely differently than earthly power. The soldiers meant only to shame him, yet their words point to a deeper reality that transcends their cruelty. Even in one of his darkest moments, Jesus was carrying out a kind of kingship rooted in love and sacrifice rather than force.
