What does Mark 15:16 mean?
When Jesus was arrested, the Roman soldiers took him into their headquarters (called the Praetorium), which functioned as both their military base and the governor's official residence. A cohort was a substantial military unit, so "the whole cohort" likely means several hundred soldiers gathered there. What follows in Mark's account is one of the most painful moments in Scripture, as these soldiers mock and brutalize Jesus before his crucifixion.
