What does Mark 14:53 mean?

Jesus was arrested and brought before the Jewish council, the group that held the most religious and legal authority in Jerusalem. These leaders, the chief priests and elders and scribes, gathered together in a formal assembly—essentially the equivalent of a trial, though it was conducted at night, which violated their own rules about proper procedure. What's significant here is that they came together as a unified body, treating this moment as serious and deliberate, even though many of them had already decided what they wanted to happen. This scene shows how an entire system of power can move against one person, and it sets the stage for the injustice that follows.
