What does Mark 14:40 mean?
Jesus had asked his closest friends to stay awake and pray with him during the darkest hours of his life, but exhaustion kept pulling them under. Their heaviness wasn't from lack of love, but from the weight of fear, confusion, and simple human limitation. When Jesus found them asleep a second time, they couldn't even form an explanation, which speaks to how overwhelmed and disoriented they felt in that moment. There's something both tender and painful here: Jesus needed them, but they couldn't stay present. Many of us know this feeling from both sides, whether we've been unable to show up for someone we love, or we've felt the loneliness of going through something hard without the support we desperately wanted. The passage doesn't condemn the disciples for their weakness, but simply acknowledges that in crisis, even our best intentions can fail us.
