What does Mark 14:34 mean?
Jesus is pouring out his deepest anguish in the garden of Gethsemane, just hours before his arrest and crucifixion. When he says his soul is sorrowful "even to death," he's expressing grief so overwhelming it feels lethal, like sorrow itself could kill him. He's not asking his disciples to solve his pain or offer advice, just to stay awake and present with him in his darkest moment. This is profoundly human and profoundly honest. Jesus doesn't hide his fear or dread as though faith means appearing unshaken. Instead, he models what real trust looks like: naming the weight you're carrying while still turning toward God and asking loved ones not to abandon you.
