Mark 14:18
“As they sat and were eating, Jesus said, “Most certainly I tell you, one of you will betray me—he who eats with me.””
What does Mark 14:18 mean?
Jesus knew what was coming, and he spoke these words during the Passover meal with his closest followers. Being told that a friend at the table would turn against him must have struck the disciples like ice water—betrayal by someone who shared your meal was considered especially grave in that culture, a violation of trust and hospitality. What's remarkable is that Jesus stated this plainly rather than keeping it secret. He gave them the truth, even though it was painful and must have created an awful tension in the room. By mentioning "he who eats with me," Jesus was pointing to the intimacy that made the betrayal so dark: this wasn't a stranger's treachery, but a companion's.
