Mark 13:9
“But watch yourselves, for they will deliver you up to councils. You will be beaten in synagogues. You will stand before rulers and kings for my sake, for a testimony to them.”
What does Mark 13:9 mean?
Jesus is preparing his followers for real hardship, not painting a rosy picture of faith. He's saying that choosing to follow him will sometimes mean facing opposition, judgment, and even violence from those in power. The councils and synagogues he mentions were the places where Jewish authority gathered, so this would have felt deeply personal to his first listeners, who knew these institutions well.
