What does Mark 13:14 mean?
Jesus is warning his followers about a time of terrible upheaval and urging them to recognize the danger and respond quickly. The phrase "abomination of desolation" refers to profound desecration of sacred space, language Daniel used to describe invasion and destruction of the temple. When you see these signs of catastrophe unfolding, Jesus says, don't hesitate or try to gather your belongings, just leave immediately for safety. The urgency here speaks to something important: there are moments when clinging to what we have or hoping things will improve can actually put us in greater danger. For the original listeners, this was literal advice about surviving Roman siege. For us today, it carries a deeper message about recognizing when we need to change course, let go of what's holding us back, or seek refuge in God rather than in our own plans. Jesus is calling us to spiritual alertness and willingness to act decisively when our relationship with God requires it.
