What does Mark 12:35 mean?

Jesus poses a question that might seem puzzling at first, but he's gently challenging an assumption his listeners held dear. The religious teachers of his time taught that the promised Messiah would be a descendant of King David, which was based on Old Testament prophecies. But Jesus is asking them to think more deeply: if the Messiah is merely David's son, how can he also be David's Lord, as the Psalms suggest? He's inviting people to wrestle with the idea that the Messiah might be something greater and more mysterious than simply a political successor to Israel's greatest king. This moment shows Jesus teaching with questions rather than arguments, drawing people into reflection rather than debate.
