The second is like this, ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these.”

What does Mark 12:31 mean?

Jesus is saying that the entire law and all the prophets come down to just two things: loving God with everything you have, and treating others with the same care and respect you naturally want for yourself. When he calls these two commandments greater than all others, he's cutting through endless rules and obligations to show us what actually matters most. The beauty of this is that it's both radical and simple, requiring everything from us while being clear enough that anyone can understand it, whether you're a scholar or someone just trying to figure out how to live right.
