What does Mark 12:28 mean?
A scribe, trained in Jewish law, approaches Jesus after watching him skillfully handle tough questions from other religious leaders. Impressed by Jesus's wisdom, this scribe asks what many thoughtful people wonder: if God gave us so many laws and rules, which one matters most? It's a sincere question from someone genuinely trying to understand what God actually cares about, not a trap. Jesus's answer (which continues in the next verse) points to love of God and neighbor as the heart of everything else, suggesting that all the rules and practices ultimately exist to help us love better.
