What does Mark 12:2 mean?

A landowner sends his servant to collect what's rightfully his, the portion of the harvest he's entitled to from the vineyard he owns. This is the opening move in Jesus's parable about tenants who refuse to honor their obligations and mistreat the messengers sent to collect payment. The simplicity of the request—a fair share of the crops—makes what happens next (the tenants' violent rejection) all the more striking and revealing about human nature and rebellion against authority.
