What does Mark 12:19 mean?
The Sadducees are quoting the levirate law from Deuteronomy, an ancient practice where if a man died childless, his brother would marry his widow to preserve the family line and inheritance. They're setting up a trick question to trap Jesus, asking what happens in the resurrection if a woman was married to multiple brothers in succession (which they expected might happen under this law). Their real agenda is to mock the idea of resurrection altogether, since they didn't believe in an afterlife. Understanding this context helps us see that Jesus isn't being asked a genuine question about marriage and family, but rather being challenged on whether resurrection makes sense at all.
