What does Mark 10:38 mean?
James and John have just asked Jesus for the best seats in his coming kingdom, thinking mostly about honor and power. Jesus responds by asking if they understand what they're really requesting, because following him closely means sharing in his suffering and sacrifice, not just his glory. When Jesus speaks of drinking the cup and being baptized with baptism, he's using images from the Old Testament that represent deep pain and overwhelming difficulty. He's essentially asking whether they're willing to go through what he's about to face, including rejection, betrayal, and the cross. It's a gentle but serious wake-up call that discipleship costs something real. The question still echoes for us today: when we ask to be close to Jesus or to follow him more deeply, are we prepared for what that actually means? Often we want the comfort and hope of faith without the refining that comes from sacrifice and suffering. Jesus invites us to be honest about that tension rather than pretend it doesn't exist.
