What does Mark 10:28 mean?

Peter is responding to Jesus's teaching about how hard it is for the wealthy to enter God's kingdom, and he's essentially saying, "Well, we did it, didn't we?" He's reminding Jesus that the disciples have already made the sacrifice Jesus was talking about. There's something very human in Peter's words—a mix of wanting reassurance that their commitment mattered and perhaps a bit of pride in what they've given up. Jesus doesn't dismiss Peter's point, but in the verses that follow, he promises that those who've made such sacrifices will receive far more in return, both in this life and the next. It's a reminder that Jesus takes seriously the cost of following him and doesn't forget what his followers leave behind.
