“Jesus said to him, “Why do you call me good? No one is good except one—God.”
What does Mark 10:18 mean?
Jesus isn't saying he isn't good—he's redirecting the man's thinking toward something deeper. The rich young ruler had just called Jesus "Good Teacher," perhaps as flattery or out of habit, without really grasping who Jesus actually was. By pointing back to God as the only source of true goodness, Jesus invites the man to recognize that genuine goodness comes from God alone, and to consider whether he's ready to align his life with that standard. This moment opens the door for real transformation rather than superficial respect. Jesus is essentially asking: if you truly understood that only God defines goodness, would you be willing to follow what he asks of you? It's a gentle but firm call to move beyond courtesy and into authentic faith.
