What does Mark 1:44 mean?

Jesus heals a man with leprosy and then tells him not to broadcast what happened, but instead to go through the proper religious channels by showing himself to a priest and making the required offerings. This might seem contradictory, but Jesus is actually being wise and respectful of both the law and the man's own wellbeing. A priest's official declaration was necessary for the healed person to rejoin community and worship, and following the lawful process would be more credible "testimony" to his healing than the man simply telling his story. Jesus shows us that true faith sometimes means doing the right thing quietly and through proper channels, rather than seeking attention for miracles.
