What does Mark 1:3 mean?
John the Baptist is being described here as someone who goes out into the desert wilderness to prepare people's hearts for Jesus' arrival. The image of "making ready the way" comes from the ancient practice of servants clearing and straightening a road before an important dignitary traveled through, so this is a picture of preparation and readiness. John's whole ministry was about calling people to repentance, to turn from their old ways so they could actually recognize and receive Jesus when he came. It's a beautiful reminder that encountering God often requires us to do some internal work first, to clear away the obstacles in our own hearts that might keep us from seeing him clearly.
