Malachi 3:7
“From the days of your fathers you have turned away from my ordinances, and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says Yahweh of Armies. “But you say, ‘How shall we return?’”
What does Malachi 3:7 mean?
God is calling His people back to Him after they've drifted away, and He's offering something beautiful in return: His own presence and faithfulness. The people had gradually abandoned His ways, not through one dramatic rebellion but through generations of small neglect, and now God is inviting them to turn around. What makes this verse hit hard is the people's confused response, "How shall we return?" They've strayed so far that they don't even recognize the path back, or they're genuinely bewildered about what change would look like. This captures something true about our own moments of distance from God, when we're not sure where we went wrong or how to find our way home again. The good news is that God Himself promises to meet us halfway, which means the return doesn't depend entirely on our ability to get it perfect.
