What does Malachi 1:2 mean?
God opens this conversation with a simple, direct claim: I have loved you. But the people of Malachi's time couldn't feel it. They were struggling, discouraged, and cynical, so they essentially asked God to prove it. God's answer points back to a choice made long before, when He favored Jacob over his older brother Esau, even before either was born. This wasn't because Jacob was better or more deserving, but because God's love operates on a different logic than fairness or performance. God is reminding a weary people that His commitment to them runs deeper than current circumstances and goes back to the very foundation of their existence as a nation. When you're in a season of doubt or feeling distant from God, this verse invites you to remember: sometimes love is not something you feel right now, but something you can trace backward through your history and forward in faith.
